Leopard spots and colour change

Last summer I noticed the weirdest thing. Athena started to get darker spots in her fur that were different to the touch, and in some areas, her fur was changing colour to brown-ish as well. Over the weeks, this got worse, and these spots turned into a dark patch running the length of her back. Obviously, the doom scenario’s start going through your mind. Some conditions and infections can cause skin and fur change. But I have since learned that this is called an “Eel Stripe”.

Apparently, this is caused by the way the fur grows. Dark fur pushes up through the coat, causing differently caused patches. The fur grows from the top down, so this stripe across the back will eventually blend in until they have shed their summer or winter coat completely.

I thought this might be helpful. I had never seen it before.
