Biting :(

Biting :(

MyLo has had some issues lately. We had some tree work done about a month ago. When the guys were finished in the back yard, I asked my husband to make sure they were done. He checked and they said it was clear. We let the dogs out in the back, and apparently one of the guys went back there without us knowing. MyLo bit him in the arm. We are dealing with our insurance company for that liability. The guy didn’t report it to police.

Saturday, while we were gone, 2 boys climbed my 6 foot fence and went into my backyard. The dogs happened to be outside and MyLo bit one of the boys. Ambulance was called and now MyLo is in quarantine for 10 days for a rabies observation (even though the boys were trespassing on our property).

When I get him back home next week, I have to start working on getting him not to bite. He isn’t aggressive AT ALL towards any of us. The only time he has ever showed any issues were these times when there were people in our backyard without any of us back there. I think he was just protecting his territory 🙁 He is terrified in the kennel and wants to come home so badly 🙁

That is awful, but understandable. He is very clearly protecting his territory, and his owners, too. It is -VERY- important to seek professional help, from a certified dog trainer, right away! DO call around. Do not just take advice from the first person willing to talk to you. Make some calls, and talk to multiple dog trainers, and see which one you feel most comfortable with.

More than likely, he/she will have to come to your home, to observe what is going on. Location and behaviour are very closely linked. And he may not show any of his problems in a dog school. In addition, you as owners might unwittingly be adding to the behaviour in some way.

I’ve seen dogs recover from worse than this, but it is not to be taken lightly. Please let us know how it goes.

Weims are protectors. It is in their breed. If you think in his language, he was doing his job.

i hope he is back very soon!

He had bloat about 5 or 6 weeks ago. He almost died and underwent emergency surgery. I think some of this may be stemming from the stress of all that he just went through.

We have people over to our home all the time and he has never been aggressive towards anyone prior to these incidents.  We have also had people inside our home since the first incident and he was fine. It’s only when someone who is not supposed to be in our backyard yard is there without any of us back there with them. I have talked to the staff at my vet and they say that he has been perfectly fine with his temperament (just stressed though).

I work very closely with a Dog Rescue in our town. I have contacted our behavior specialist and will hopefully be able to start him in training as soon as I get him out of the vet next week.

Legislation is a toughie in this case. Although socially unacceptable, I can’t really blame the dog. Biting burglar, dog is a hero. Biting kids that are intruding your property is bad. How is he supposed to know the difference?

When I was a kid I climbed into someone’s yard to grab my ball. I got bit by a Rottweiler. Who’s fault was that really? My own, for being a dumb brat not respecting other people’s property, and being stupid enough to wander into the “guard area” of the dog. He did his job. Protecting his owner.
